Adelaide Oval

05/09/2003

Adelaide

Adelaide Oval has undergone a $20 million redevelopment for Rugby World Cup 2003, funded entirely by the South Australian Cricket Association, with two new grandstands built adjacent to the Victor Richardson Gates.

Dating back to 1871, Adelaide Oval is regarded as the most picturesque Test cricket ground in the world with its location on the banks of Torrens Lake in the parklands on the northern side of the city.

The ground hosted its first Test match in 1884 and while still primarily a cricket venue - and home of the West End Redbacks the South Australian state team - it has staged 16 sports including Australian football, archery, rugby league and cycling.

Adelaide Oval will host two Rugby World Cup 2003 matches on consecutive days, the first being world champions Australia against Namibia on 25 October, the first time the Wallabies have played a Test in South Australia.

The second match at the Oval, whose western public and members grandstands and scoreboard are also listed on the City of Adelaide Heritage Register, is another Pool A encounter between Argentina and Ireland.

How to get there: With a reputation as the ’20-minute city’ given that you can get from A to B in Adelaide in less than half an hour, the Adelaide Oval is a 10-minute walk from the Adelaide Railway Station in the Central Business District.

Adelaide Oval is also well served by other forms of public transport, including buses and trams, with over 300 services passing by every day. An alternative method of transport is a taxi.
