York Park, the home of football in the northern Tasmanian city of Launceston, is one of the three smallest stadiums being used during Rugby World Cup 2003 with a capacity of only 20,000, half of which is seated.
A new venue in the world of rugby, York Park underwent a $6.5 million redevelopment in 2002 to bring it up to Australian Football League (AFL) standards and the Hawthorn club have agreed to play a minimum of two matches there a year.
Built on land that has previously been a swamp and a rubbish tip, York Park hosted its first AFL roster game in May 2001 when the Hawthorn Hawks beat Port Adelaide, a game watched by a then record crowd of 17,460.
York Park stages one Rugby World Cup 2003 match, the Pool A encounter between Romania and Namibia on 30 October. Locals born on odd days are being encouraged to support one team and those born on even days the other.
How to get there:
The stadium is located in the Inveresk Cultural Precinct, which is only two kilometres from the city centre of Launceston and is therefore about a five minute walk. However if you prefer there is also a bus from the city centre to York Park.
York Park is only 15 kilometres from Launceston Airport, an hour flight from Melbourne or just under two hours from Sydney, and reachable by taxi or shuttle bus in 15 minutes at a cost of around $25.
