Aussie Stadium

05/09/2003

Sydney

Aussie Stadium, known as Sydney Football Stadium until last year when Aussie Home Loans purchased the naming rights, lies next to the Sydney Cricket Ground at Moore Park, which is only four kilometres from the Central Business District.

The $68 million Aussie Stadium was opened in late January 1988. Since then it has been is used for rugby league, rugby union and soccer, having been the main venue for the latter at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

The stadium, with a capacity of 42,000, staged its first rugby union Test in July 1989 when Australia beat the British and Irish Lions 30-12 and was also the venue of the National Rugby League Grand Final until the late 1990s.

Rugby World Cup 2003 will see Aussie Stadium host five games across three Pools – A, B and C – with the first game being Ireland against Namibia on October 19.

Other nations to play at Aussie Stadium, which is home to the New South Wales Waratahs and rugby league outfits the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Sydney Roosters, are Argentina, Romania, South Africa, Georgia, Uruguay, Scotland and Fiji.

How to get there: Aussie Stadium, like the other Rugby World Cup 2003 venues, is well serviced by  trains and buses with extra services laid on for match days.

The nearest train station is Central, from where you can either walk or catch the match day express shuttle to the centre of Moore Park, which run every five minutes and use a special bus lane to get you there in five minutes.

If you choose this option a ‘Moore Park Link’ (a combined train/bus ticket) is available from most CityRail stations with a ticket office.

Alternatively Aussie Stadium is a 20-minute walk from Central, along Devonshire Street, or 30 minutes from Bondi Junction station via Oxford Street.
