Ireland's Ronan O'Gara looks to offload

Ireland beat Namibia

19/10/2003

Ireland lead Pool A with the maximum 10 points after beating Namibia 64-7 in the Rugby World Cup 2003 at Aussie Stadium in Sydney.

The Irish went some of the way to avenging a little known international rugby imbalance with a 10 try performance.

In an odd statistic Namibia now hold a 2-1 advantage over Ireland, winning the first two Tests between the countries, 26-15 and 15-6 at Windhoek in 1991.

Eric Miller at number 8 played well for Ireland on a difficult night, scoring two tries and pressing his claims for a starting berth in the important 26 October clash with Argentina in Adelaide.

Fly half Ronan O’Gara also gave the Irish selectors plenty to think about, kicking seven conversions and playing well in general play to match the 18 point effort of his fly half competition David Humphreys in the 45-17 defeat of Romania.

The win set an Irish RWC point scoring and tries record, beating the eight try, 55-11 win over Zimbabwe in the 1991 Tournament.

Ireland led 33-7 in constant rain at half time scoring five tries to one and collected a bonus point.

Ireland had three tries and Namibian lock Heino Senekal a yellow card inside the opening 20 minutes. Marcus Horan scored the fourth Irish try and his first in a Test without realising after the ball rolled under his chest while he made a tackle over the Namibian try line.

Centre Corne Powell scored the Namibian try in the 38th minute and Emile Wessels converted.

It took the Irish 11 minutes to score in the second half, Quinlan getting his second from a charge down.

Ireland next play Argentina in Adelaide on 26 October, while Namibia line up against Australia, also in Adelaide on 25 October.

Australia is second in Pool A with nine points and Argentina has five after the 67-14 win over Namibia in their second match.
