ITA 19 v CAN 14: What they said

21/10/2003

Italian coach John Kirwan on the game:

"It was unbelievable in the coach's box. The boys were a bit uptight, made a few silly mistakes but we got the win and now there's a showdown on Saturday.

"It was hard to get any rhythm. I don't think we held on to the ball for more than three phases but I'm glad we got all that out of the way before Wales."

Italy's Carlo Checcinato on the game:

"We knew it would be a hard game for us after Tonga. We had to find confidence to play a good Canada team and now we get ready for Wales."

Canada coach David Clark on the game:

"It was an incredible performance. I was screaming from the coach's box but we kept having kicks at goals when we should have been going for the try.

"We're getting better and better and better. That performance came straight from the gut and the heart. The second half was a turnaround from the first.

"Tonight we showed 20,000 people we can play rugby, but more importantly we can go back to Canada with our heads held high."

Canada captain Al Charron on the match:

"We played well, we played hard, but we didn't get the points when we needed to. It was a hard fought game. Italy came out on top and well deserved to them.

"We started better in the second half, but again we've got to be more clinical in our set pieces and we'll work on that for the game with Tonga."
