FIJ 41 - JAP 13 What they said

23/10/2003

All the views that matter after the Fiji v Japan game in Townsville.

Alifereti DOVIVERATA (FIJ) - captain

On the result for Fiji:

"Yes, it was a very important game for us, especially considering our next game against Scotland."

On whether the team was happy with the 41-13 victory:

"Yes, the boys will be happy about that."

Mac McCALLION (FIJ) - coach

On what it is like coaching the Fiji team:

"It's pressure all the way. You're jumping up and down one minute, and your heart's in your mouth the next."

On what the Fijians will have to improve for the vital match against Scotland:

"We're just going to have to work on the ruck and maul."

On the Japanese performance:

"They've certainly improved. They've shown the world they can be a force to be reckoned with."

Alivereti MOCELUTU (FIJ) - flanker

On the win:

"We are very happy with the win. This was an important game and we came out with what we wanted - the points for the match and the bonus point. We are now confident going into the Scotland match."

Shogo MUKAI (JPN) - coach

On today's game:

"The first half was as we had planned, we played really well. In the second half, Fiji did lots of long kicking and our forwards had to run back all the time. This exhausted our players. We made lots of mistakes in Fiji territory and gave away penalties which contributed to Fiji's big score."

"Also, Fiji's individual skills in running and their strength were especially notable."

Takeomi ITO (JPN) - No. 8

On today's game:

"The first half was exactly as we wanted but in the second half there were too many mistakes and that was the reason we lost."

Takuro MIUCHI (JPN) - captain

On Japan's performance:

"We came to the game with a strong determination, but the Fiji players had strong skills and were strong players. We made a lot of bad mistakes."

"We have one game to go and we want to perform against the USA. We have played really well so far in the campaign; that is thanks to the Townsville people."

On a game plan for the USA game:

"We're just going out there to do our best."

On fading after the first 60 minutes:

"Fiji were very strong in one-on-one defence."
