French fly half Frederic Michalak makes a break

FRA 51 v SCO 9 What they said

26/10/2003

Bernard LAPORTE (FRA) - Coach

On the match:

"I would like to congratulate all my players because they did a good job."

"It was important to feel some satisfaction. We want to be able to progress and go back and train and feel better."

On the scrum:

"We did well in the scrum. We put on a lot of pressure. There were a few defensive errors (from Scotland) and we took advantage of those errors."

On the traditional French style of play:

"We will play the same game in 2003. What you have seen is the French team playing at its best. We will keep playing the same way ... keep the attack on to get the results."

On whether he learnt anything from the England v South Africa match:

"In the England v South Africa match we see very good defence. Perhaps the best defence in the world ... it didn't teach us much about the English game because we already know about the English team."

On whether he will rest players for the match against the USA:

"No. It is not a matter of giving them a break ... we simply want to give others a chance to participate and show their talent."

Fabien GALTHIE (FRA) - Captain

On his highlights of the match:

"First of all the victory. We got a bonus point. The quality of the game was good. We played a simple game and we got a good result."

On whether the 'real' Tournament had started yet or would that occur at the Quarter Finals:

"We believe that it (the Tournament) started from the time we arrived here. We believed when we played Fiji it was an important game. When we played Japan it was an important game. And when we play the USA it will be an important game."

On the match:

"It was important for us to have played a good match tonight and we are very happy with our performance. We tried to play well in every match. I don't know if it was convincing, but it was important for us to win and get five points."

Ian McGEECHAN (SCO) - Coach

On whether Scotland can re-group for its next match with Fiji:

"Yeah, sure we can. It was a tough game, there are a lot of tired players in the dressing room. Their attitude is superb, that will come through next week for the Fiji game."

On how he feels about the defeat to France:

"It's disappointing as it is on a world stage. We would like to give a good account of ourselves, we worked very hard today and saw a very, very good French team. I think the score didn't reflect the effort."

Jim TELFER (SCO) - Assistant Coach

On whether he thinks France can win RWC 2003:
"If I knew that I'd be a millionaire."

On France's form so far in the Tournament:

"They're playing close to the form they were in two years ago when they won the (Six Nations) Grand Slam."

On the positives Scotland can take from the match:

"I thought Cameron MATHER played very well, he showed a good execution. It was just they (France) were quicker getting the ball, but I really couldn't fault the effort of Scotland, it was better than the last two games. They played with their hearts."

Bryan REDPATH (SCO) - Captain

On why France improved as the match went on:

"They took their opportunities well, they were 15 points in front and in international rugby if a team gets there, they can grind you down. We had to get our game going which is difficult when they are on the front foot."

On how to get the team motivated for next match:

"First of all (we will) get over the disappointment of tonight. Tomorrow we'll sit down and have a chat about everything for next week. Next week is a massive one-off game, whoever wins goes through (to the Quarter Finals), that is a big incentive."
