Fiji's Rupeni Caucau tries to outwit Scotland's Glenn Metcalfe with a chip-through

SCO 22 v FIJ 20 What they said

01/11/2003

Ian McGeechan (SCO) - Coach

On whether he felt that the last-gasp try was a just result for Scotland:

"We played well in the second half. Fiji had a good opening 20 minutes, but we weathered that. We put pressure on them and that gave us opportunities."

"I would have preferred if it (the try) was not in the last two minutes. However. I feel our discipline was outstanding."

Bryan Redpath (SCO) - Captain

On the closeness of the match:

"We knew what to expect. They were exceptional. They got the ball quickly to the danger men but we held possession longer and we came out on top."

On the upcoming match against either Ireland or Australia in the Quarter Finals:

"We are the underdogs, we have nothing to lose, just to grow and throw everything at it."

Chris Paterson (SCO) - Flyhalf

On the Fiji performance:

"They were tremendously tough."

Tom Smith (SCO) - Prop

On his scoring a vital try in the 77th minute to clinch the match for Scotland 22-20:

"It was obviously a running maul. A few bodies piled on top of each other and the gap opened up. I just happened to be on the bottom of the pile of bodies."

"That was an overwhelming relief and it has been a good day."

Mac McCallion (FIJ) - Coach

On the loss:

"Naturally we're disappointed. There is no doubt about it. In the first half it was there for the taking. The crucial moment was when we lost our hooker, Greg SMITH five minutes before half time. We lost our composure after that. Scotland came back very strongly and took the win."

On Rupeni Caucau's performance:

"The tries he scored today, only he could score. To say he is a player of the Tournament, I would not go that far. I'm certainly pleased to have him in our squad. He is only 23 years of age. He currently has more potential than any other player I have ever seen. He could be a superstar."

Whether he was disappointed that the referee didn't stop the clock while a player was down in the final moments:

"No, I wasn't disappointed with the referee at all. We blew a couple of tries. He refereed the game pretty well."

Alifereti Doviverata (FIJ) - Captain

On whether the team is proud of it's performance:

"Yes, but the ball just bounced their (Scotland's) way."

Greg Smith (FIJ) - Hooker

On the disappointment of the loss:

"We let it slip. It is a big day, the world was watching but we didn't come through. We are very disappointed."
