WAL 41 v CAN 10: What they said

13/10/2003

Wales coach Steve Hansen on the win:

"From a win point of view it was great."

On Canada's tactics:

"When you analyse the way they play they just kick most of the time, so it wasn't a surprise."

On the benefits of the bonus point:

"We'll take the bonus point, but if you win three or four matches it should be enough."

On Sonny Parker's (WAL) try:

"The try Sonny scored was as good as any I have seen while in charge of the team."

Wales wing Gareth Thomas on being one try short of the Welsh record:

"I would give up every try for Wales to do well in this World Cup."

Wales centre Iestyn Harris on Wales' 41-10 win:

"It's always nice to get off to a good start, but we've got to stop dropping the ball if we're to have a chance."

Wales captain Colin Charvis on scoring five tries and gaining a bonus point:

"We didn't intend to go for a bonus point, we knew Canada were going to be very tough and we just wanted to win."

"We had a game plan that was well structured for us to get the points on the board early and we just wanted to get our noses in front and see whether we could beat them, then maybe go for a bonus point later on."

Canadian coach David Clark:

"We played well below what we are capable of playing. After a relatively successful first fifteen minutes we lost our shape and structure pretty easily."

"We expected to be much closer but we never got into any of our sequencing and any kind of rhythm. Once they began to run at us, we became inconsistent and couldn't find ways to keep Wales under control."

On positives from the match:

"It's hard to take positives out of the match because we expected the result to be closer."

On whether his side will field a second team against the All Blacks:

"We don't believe in second teams. We never had any intention of labelling this Canadian side as a first and second side."

On the Canadian defeat:

"We had a hard day. We lost our structure too easily."

"We looked good (early on), we were ahead by three points and chasing well and then we lost it."

Captain Al Charron:

"I wish I could have given more. I'm personally not happy with my game today. International rugby is becoming faster and faster and I'm getting slower and slower. I try to play with everything I have and maybe that isn't enough any more. "

On Canada's performance in the 41-10 defeat:

"Against teams like Wales, who are ranked higher than us, we had to play our very best and we didn't do that today. Wales were the better team today and they deserved to win"

On whether the Canadian play fell away after the early game plan had seemed to work:

"It did fall apart a bit. We needed to get the points at the start, and we didn't. It would have given us a real boost. Unfortunately things didn't really work for us, Wales was much quicker than we were."

On the Canadians' 26 missed tackles:

"You can't miss that many tackles, you don't get the job done. All credit to them, we have to go back to the drawing board."
