England spoil Georgia's party

12/10/2003

England have defeated Georgia 84-6 in their opening Pool C clash at Subiaco Oval in Perth to inflict the heaviest Test loss on the Lelos.

In a battle of David and Goliath proportions the result was never in doubt, only the margin.

A gallant Georgia, making their Rugby World Cup debut, held out their star studded opponents for the opening 14 minutes before England took control of the match, scoring 12 tries.

England fly half Jonny Wilkinson got proceedings under way with a penalty in the third minute, but Georgia levelled at 3-3 after 10 minutes through wing Malkhaz Urjukashvili.

England take control

That was to be the last of Georgia's points in the half as England took control of the match with four unanswered tries.

In the 14th minute Wilkinson got the ball rolling for England, firing a long pass out to centre Mike Tindall to score in the left corner.

Matt Dawson scored five minutes later after darting through a hole near the scrum base and England were on their way.

Georgia defend

Georgia defended stoutly for 12 phases before England hooker Steve Thompson marched through the middle of their defence to score a  try under the posts in the 24th minute.

Flanker Neil Back was the next into the action, diving on a loose ball in the Georgia in goal area. Further points off the boot of Wilkinson gave England a 34-3 lead at the break.

England coach Clive Woodward replaced his trump card Wilkinson shortly after half time but the English procession continued.

Dallaglio opened the scoring for England in the second half with Cohen and Greenwood picking up two tries apiece.

Late tries to Jason Robinson and Dan Luger pushed England passed Georgia’s biggest Test defeat.
