Georgia on my mind

23/09/2003

By Willy Billiard and Ben Grace

He looks every bit the Georgian Prince with his ceremonial dagger and the ancient Eastern European war garb of a red cheykezka, complete with pockets for carrying ammuniton.

Yet his dual life is reflected in the view from his home, Sydney’s iconic Harbour Bridge smiling upside down through his large bay windows.

He is Prince Dadianov, whose family ruled Georgia for over 600 years. He is also Victor Greenwich, a man who has lived in Australia for over 16 years as Georgia's Consulate-General and only live in diplomat.

So how does one address the man who will be the face of Georgian rugby from when they arrive in Perth, Australia, at the beginning of October to compete in Rugby World Cup 2003?

“Whatever [title] you're comfortable with,” he said. “Some people call me your Highness, or Prince Dadianov, or just simply Victor.

“I am very proud of my history, of my origins but on the other hand I also respect the informality of the Australian people.”

Prince Victor Dadianov arrived in Australia by way of New Zealand, where his three sons were born, and has found in the past few years a growing local consciousness of Georgia as a country.

“Thirty years ago nobody knew about Georgia in Australia but more and more we are talked about, through our Olympic team, (who represented Georgia on the international sporting stage for the first time in the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000) our wine and now the Rugby World Cup,” he said.

In fact, he believes that this Rugby World Cup could well be the biggest gathering of Georgians in Australia’s history.

An observation that appears especially true in Perth where already local newspapers have begun fundraising events for Georgian hospitals and radio stations have already helped form the offical Georgian Supporters Club.

“I receive phone calls and emails every day from Australians, some who don’t really know Georgia but want to support them.

“Georgia is a small team and maybe they don’t have much hope of winning the World Cup, but it is interesting how they want to help out the underdog.”

And the Prince is obviously very proud of his relatively small rugby nation getting into such a large international tournament as the Rugby World Cup, stating that the event will change the sporting atmosphere in Georgia as much as the Tournament will change the understanding of Georgia in the eyes of the world.

“It is always soccer, soccer, soccer in Georgia but since the Rugby World Cup the atmosphere is changing. Now it’s rugby.

Prince Victor Dadianov will greet his team as they enter Australia for their opening match in Pool C against England in Perth on 12 October.
