With Sunday seeing the clash of the two traditional superpowers of European rugby. England are preparing themselves for, arguably, their biggest game since their quarter final loss to South Africa in RWC 1999.
While England were the pre-Tournament favourites, France have been the quiet achievers of RWC 2003 and have gained many admirers. It all adds up to a classic confrontation.
Johnson looks to history
England’s captain Martin Johnson has emphasised the history between these two proud rugby nations. "It's always been a big game and France are always an exciting team. I've grown up watching them play. They are a world class team with a great World Cup record, you just have to look at the last World Cup."
While the game may have moved ahead leaps and bounds in terms of technical training advances, the 82 Test veteran believes it will boil down to the basic emotions.
"It's a rectangular bit of grass, we have 15 players, they have 15 players, you kick off and play... the game is about passion and emotion and we have to raise the stakes. It's a World Cup Semi Final for godsake!"
Hill to return?
The game marks the return of veteran Richard Hill who last played against Georgia. A hamstring strain forced some time on the sidelines but the enthusiasm is bubbling over.
"I am fully fit. It's been a very frustrating time for myself and obviously it has taken longer than expected. But I am very much ready to go if selected."
Hill also spoke of the togetherness of the squad and the focus on their goals which currently binds them together.
"We are all in this together you know ... it's a squad of 30, not just the 22 and we're all aware that we haven't reached the standards that we have set for ourselves."
