ENG 20 v AUS 17: What they said

22/11/2003

Clive Woodward (ENG) - Coach

"It was massive. I'm absolutely speechless. I'll never forget this.

"We were frustrated in the second half. We've got to give credit to Australia…with 20 minutes of extra time it can go any way."

"I'm just happy for the players you know, they put so much into it, they put their heart and soul into it.

"Credit to Australia, it's been a great World Cup, they've had an absolutely brilliant tournament, they've got here to the Final themselves and played great. It couldn't have been any closer and I'm just happy to be on the right side."

Martin Johnson (ENG) - Captain

"Wilko (Jonny Wilkinson) at the end ... brilliant. I can't say enough about it. Wilko was there and right at the death... you'd (rather) have no one else, would you?

"It was a huge effort from the entire squad of players, coach and physios. And thanks to the fans, they were brilliant."

Lawrence Dallaglio (ENG) - no. 8

"It's fantastic. They called us Dad's Army. I think we proved something tonight. I'm sure back home (in England) they're going absolutely berserk.
To come down here and take the trophy from the Southern Hemisphere is absolutely fantastic."

George Gregan (AUS) - Captain

"It was a massive final, wasn't it? It went into extra time, two world class teams going at it hammer and tongs. You know, congratulations must be extended to the English team. They delivered under pressure and they delivered when it counted."

"But I'm so proud of my guys, we gutsed it out, we fought back, we were down 14-5, we brought it back to extra time. To all the support here both English fans and Australian fans, for us as players it's a highlight of our career and thank you for making it such a wonderful night."

On Jonny Wilkinson (ENG):

"He's outstanding under pressure. He missed a few early in the match but he he knocked over the one that counted and you've got to take you're hat off to him for that."

Stirling Mortlock (AUS) - Centre

“What more could you want (from a match)?"

Ben Cohen (ENG) - Wing

"I can't quite say enough words to say how I feel, especially with the World Cup footy (soccer win in 1966). It's two wins in the family, I can't believe it ... it's fantastic."

"I don't think we played particularly well in the second half, luckily the first half held us up well. At the end of the day, it's who's in front at the end."

Jonny Wilkinson (ENG) - Flyhalf

"We knew we had to hang in there. I didn't want the game to go to a drop goal competition. I just wanted to win so much for the other guys. It was frustrating to see a couple (of drop goal attempts) go wide and in the end I just had to make sure it (the final attempt) hit my foot."

On winning RWC 2003:

"I've got no voice left. It's what we've fought for for so long. Every single game we've put ourselves on the line. It's been one of those years certainly I'll never forget."

On whether they had the game under control at half-time:

"I don't think you ever have it under control against a team like Australia. They're a world class side."

On the winning drop goal:

"I missed two, then I missed three and then fortunately the fourth went over. You never know with 20 seconds to go but I certainly felt better than the minute before."

On celebrating the win:

"When we get back home they'll be more games to play, but I want to hold on to this moment for as long as possible. We won't be going to bed too early tonight."

On Australia's defence:

"Their pressure in defence was fantastic. You can't argue with how they played. I certainly felt under pressure."

On the length of the game:

"It was a long game wasn't it? In my dreams last night it wasn't that long."

Neil Back (ENG) - Flanker

On pre-match talk of the England forward pack being 'Dad's Army':

"All that talk of Dad's Army inspired us. We knew in extra time that they would be tired as well and now we're the world champions for the next four years."

Brendan Cannon (AUS) - Hooker

On his feelings after the match:

"I think if you were trying to describe the way the English guys feel there's probably not a word. There's probably not a word to describe the way we are all feeling. A very disappointed group of guys at the moment. We felt we were good enough. We put a lot of effort and a lot of time into getting to tonight and it's just disappointing to come up short."

On the match being decided by a late field goal in extra time:

"Yeah, that's life. Full credit to England. It was a great game of football for the conditions. You always knew Jonny Wilkinson was going to figure somewhere and it just happened to be right at the very end there."

On the scrums:

"The scrums were a good battle all night. They're a very big pack of forwards. Full credit to England they played very well."

On inspiration from injured prop Ben Darwin:

"Before the game we had a group of guys very moved. Benny Darwin got out of hospital a couple of days ago, (and) came and presented the jerseys to us. It was a very special occasion. Full credit to Benny to be able to be there."
