Mitchell: future looking bleak at All Blacks

Mitchell linked with England and France

25/11/2003

All Blacks rugby coach John Mitchell has reportedly been offered coaching positions in France and England.

TV3 reports Mitchell has been offered a salary up to three times higher than his current contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU).

The French offer amounted to about $NZ900,000.

Mitchell who could not be reached for comment has found his future the centre of speculation immediately after the All Blacks semi final exit at the World Cup this month.

His contract expires at the end of next month, and the NZRU have decided to advertise the position.

Mitchell's two year, 28 test reign with the All Blacks saw the team win 23 games, lose four and draw one.

NZRU chairman Jock Hobbs has been critical of the All Blacks' World Cup performance, while chief executive Chris Moller said Mitchell needed to "lift the bar" in a number of areas.

"(There is) concern around areas of the media, the interface with the rugby union and some sponsor activity as well," he said last Friday, adding that the off-field performance of a coach had grown in importance in recent years.
