Wallabies David Giffin is out of his team's match against

Wallabies' Giffin and England's Balshaw out of quarters

08/11/2003

Australian vice-captain and lock David Giffin has been ruled out of today’s Quarter Final against Scotland at Suncorp Stadium with a quadriceps strain.

Giffin was assessed by Australia's medical staff this morning and was deemed unfit to play, according to an Australian Rugby Union media release.

"David has trained strongly all week but pulled up sore after the Captain's Run yesterday (Friday, 7 November) so we decided to see how he was this morning before making a final call," said Wallaby coach Eddie Jones.

Justin Harrison comes into the starting lineup for Giffin with  Daniel Vickerman being promoted to the reserves bench. Openside flanker Phil Waugh is the new vice-captain.

Meanwhile, England has named wing Dan Luger as a late replacement on the reserves bench for utility Iain Balshaw for its Quarter Final against Wales at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow.

Balshaw failed to recover from an ankle injury after he was stretchered from the field during England's 111-13 win over Uruguay at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, 2 November.
