Jim Love may be based in his native New Zealand, but the Tonga coach has travelled extensively in his bid to unearth new players who are eligible to represent the Pacific Island at Rugby World Cup.
His coaching pedigree speaks for itself. Love, who succeeded Vaita Ueleni as Tonga coach in September 2001, helped Marlborough win the NPC Division Three title in 1997 and worked alongside Matt Te Pou with the New Zealand Maoris.
He spent five successful years with the New Zealand Maori outfit, which he also represented for a decade during his playing days, as the won a record 22 games in a row before his Tonga appointment.
The former back row forward, who travels to Tonga as often as possible, played more than 150 times for Marlborough in the NPC and had an All Blacks trial before moving into coaching and rugby management.
Love combines his role as Tonga coach with that of Chief Executive Officer of the New Zealand Sports Academy, which he set up in 1999. Based in the Maori heartland of Rotorua, the Academy takes in 30 young Maori men each year, all of whom study and play rugby.
