LATEST: England have made three late changes to their team because of minor injuries. Jason Leonard replaces Trevor Woodman at prop in the starting line up with wing Ben Cohen and flanker Neil Back dropping off the bench, utility back Jason Robinson and lock Ben Kay taking their places.
England’s fringe players get a chance to press their claims for a berth in the starting line up when they take on Uruguay in the final game of Pool C at Suncorp Stadium on November 2 from 17:30.
Form Guide
With Pool C all but decided, the match will be a chance for Uruguay to get one last world class competition game under their belt before heading home whilst for England it will be an opportunity to let the bench stretch their legs.
On the table Uruguay has escaped the Pool C wooden spoon with a victory over Georgia taking them to four competition points.
Previous meetings
Uruguay has never met England before.
Ins and Outs
Uruguay has made six changes to the team that beat Georgia, including one enforced change with inside centre Martin Mendaro ruled out with a Tournament ending knee injury.
His replacement is Joaquin De Freitas, making his 15th international appearance and his first run on appearance at Rugby World Cup 2003.
Coach Diego Ormaechea has also promoted three of his bench players, prop Eduardo Berruti, blindside flanker Nicolas Brignoni and wing Joaquin Pastore, from the Georgia match.
Lock Juan Miguel Alvarez, wing Jose Viana and De Freitas are the other run-on changes. Reserve backs Emiliano Caffera and Diego Reyes are the other fresh faces in the 22.
Clive Woodward has kept just five members from his premier line up that played South Africa, instead preferring to give some other players some much needed game time.
England fly half Jonny Wilkinson has been rested with Paul Grayson to take over, Jonny hanging up his boots for a game with fellow first-choice players Matt Dawson and Mike Tindall.
Jason Leonard had been set to sit out this game, but a slight lower back strain to Trevor Woodman sees the veteran prop come into the starting XV for his 110th cap, one shy of Philippe Sella's world record.
Two others have been called onto the bench in Jason Robinson and Ben Kay after Ben Cohen (minor calf strain) and Neil Back (bruised ribs) were forced to withdraw.
Lock Danny Grewcock will make his first appearance at the RWC against Uruguay after breaking his toe in the warm-up against Georgia.
Also returning from a forced absence is Will Greenwood, who rushed home due to complications with his wife’s pregnancy. The centre, who has three tries to his name so far at this RWC, will start on the bench.
Martin Corry also travelled to and from England during the week, his dash to see the birth of his first child.
Mike Catt will make his first England start for two years in the centres, lining up alongside fellow South African born centre Stuart Abbott.
Dan Luger will start on the left wing, with Iain Balshaw maintaining the opposite sideline.
Lawrence Dallaglio will play at number 8 with Joe Worsley and Lewis Moody completing the back row.
Richard Hill, who has still not recovered completely from a hamstring injury, is expected to be back come quarter final time.
Key players
Team captain and outside centre Diego Aguirre, and number 8 Rodrigo Capo are crucial components in the Uruguayan team, while props Eduardo Berruti and Pablo Lemoine will be expected to shore up the pack against the powerful English scrum.
With prop Phil Vickery to lead England at the expense of Dallaglio, expect the latter to make the most of the freedom from responsibility and become more involved in the match.
What it means
Uruguay played their grand final against Georgia but will still be looking to put in a respectable performance to finish the Tournament on a high.
An England win guarantees them top spot in Pool C.
What they said
Diego Ormaechea (URU) - Coach
“We couldn't celebrate (the 24-12 victory over Georgia). A couple of jugs of beer and that's enough. (Back to) work again."
On keeping the momentum going against England:
"People forget quickly that you won and we know that. But for us we'll work hard (against England) and we know we can play a good game."
On how he will measure success against England:
"To take our ball, to have a good scrum, good lineout and good defence. And when we have the opportunity we use (the ball), maybe we (score) tries. We (scored) two tries against Samoa, who had a good team."
England coach Clive Woodward on leaving out fly half Jonny Wilkinson for the Uruguay match:
"I didn't speak to him about it. It's my decision. I'm sure if he spoke to me about it he'd want to play, but I don't speak to any player (on selection). I had made my mind up, I was always going to rest him for this game for obvious reasons."
On Phil Vickery being named captain ahead of Lawrence Dallaglio for Sunday's match against Uruguay:
"I'd be delighted to chose Lawrence, I'd be delighted to choose Vickery, but with Lawrence he has had a couple of quiet games and I just want him to look after himself this weekend and get himself back playing to his best ... I just want him to play his own game and get a little more involved in the game.”
